WP Coach Application!

It is the intention of the Western Province Waterpolo Association to appoint Coaches for the Senior WP Waterpolo Teams taking part in the SA National Waterpolo Tournament [Currie Cup] to be held at Kings Park in Durban from Thursday 8th April > Saturday 10th April 2010 (Sunday 11th April if required for match play).

Coaches are therefore invited to submit applications, together with a current CV, to me by no later than 15th January 2010. Coaches are requested to list in priority the two teams for which they would like to be considered for selection.
The selection process will be headed by Mr. Rob Lumb, the Chairman of the Western Province Waterpolo Association, and will commence on the 20th January 2010. It is the intention to announce the successful candidates on the 22nd January 2010.
The successful candidates will be expected to be involved in the coaching of the Elite Waterpolo Squads from where most of the athletes will be considered for selection into the WP Teams.

Super League Played out in dying seconds!

After a long season of intense water polo, the result of the men's league came down to the last 10 secs of the tournament where RWC 1sts edged out SACS to give UCT the Super League title!

In the ladies, Silvertree secured a win over UCT Ladies in the last ladies game of the season to secure the Ladies Super League!

Matt from SACS and Nikita from UCT were voted the players of the tournament. Congrats!

To everyone involved well done on a great tournament. One of the main objectives of this tournament was to improve the standard of our water polo in SA. On this note we all wish UCT and Maties good fortune at the SAU tournament coming up. We expect a clean sweep!

Until 2010, keep treading!

The history of water polo as a team sport began as a demonstration of strength and swimming skill in late 19th century England and Scotland, where water sports and racing exhibitions were a feature of county fairs and festivals.^[13]^[14] Men's water polo was the among the first team sports introduced at the modern Olympic games in 1900. Water polo is now popular in many countries around the world, notably Europe (particularly in Hungary, Greece, Italy, Russia, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro), the United States, Canada and Australia. The present-day game involves teams of seven players (plus up to six substitutes), with a water polo ball similar in size to a soccer ball but constructed of waterproof nylon. The game was also influenced by a man named Stéphane Ličina, who also played the game of water polo.

BALL HANDLING SKILLS

When passing or shooting, the hips of the player should line up in the direction in which the ball is thrown with one hand which is known as the "David Taxer Effect". When passing, shooting or receiving a ball, the player rotates the whole of the upper body, using egg-beater which is the circleing of feet under water to keep the lower body in the same position, then releasing the ball with hips lined up in the direction of the throw. For extra accuracy and speed when releasing the ball, a player uses body momentum to follow through at the end of the throw.
